What does this fault code mean?
4th gear produces a ratio that deviates from the expected one. The transmission control module (TCM) compares the ratio with the value for 4th gear, and the fault may be caused by a solenoid that is not regulating correctly, a damaged connector, or mechanical wear inside the transmission.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or poor contact in the connector to one of the transmission solenoids
- A solenoid regulating incorrectly
- Mechanical faults in the transmission: worn components causing slip or low system pressure
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test to see whether it returns in 4th gear
- 2Have a workshop check the connector and wiring to the 4th gear solenoid, since it sits inside the transmission
- 3Check the transmission fluid level and condition if the car allows it; if the fluid smells burnt, have a workshop change it
- 4If the connector and fluid are sound, have a workshop check the solenoids and the transmission's mechanics
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning lamp (MIL) and the general warning lamp come on
- Abnormal slipping gear changes
- Harsh or missing gear changes
- Text message and yellow warning symbol in the display
- The malfunction indicator lamp (Check engine) comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect2
- The transmission blocks gears that are not available
- Neutral check is blocked
