What does this fault code mean?
5th gear has a ratio that deviates from the expected one, and the transmission control module (TCM) detects this by comparing the ratio with the value for 5th gear. The cause may be a solenoid that is not regulating correctly, a damaged connector at the solenoid, or wear that causes slip and low system pressure.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or poor contact in the connector to a solenoid
- A solenoid regulating incorrectly
- Wear in the transmission causing slip or low system pressure
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test the car in fifth gear to see whether it returns
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the solenoids that belong to 5th gear in the tool's test and listen for clicks
- 3Have a workshop check the solenoid connectors and wiring, since they sit inside the transmission
- 4If the connectors and wiring are sound, have a workshop assess the oil and the transmission's mechanics
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning lamp (MIL) and the general warning lamp come on
- Yellow warning symbol and text message in the display
- Gear changes become abnormally slipping
- Gear changes are harsh, jerky or do not happen
- Gear changes take a long time or happen too early, too late or too often
What the fault can affect3
- The transmission blocks gears that are not available
- Neutral check is blocked
- Automatic engine start/stop is switched off
