What does this fault code mean?
The transmission control module (TCM) has selected 1st gear, but the ratio is close to that of another gear. The fault therefore concerns first gear and may be caused by a solenoid stuck in the off or on position, or by a mechanical fault in the transmission.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, or one of the solenoids stuck in the off or on position
- Mechanical faults in the transmission
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test the car in first gear to see whether it returns
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the solenoids that belong to 1st gear in the tool's test and listen for clicks
- 3Have a workshop check the transmission fluid quality and level; if the fluid smells burnt it should be changed
- 4Have a workshop check the solenoid connectors and wiring and look into the transmission's mechanics

- The emissions warning lamp (MIL) and the general warning lamp come on
- Abnormal slipping or missing gear changes
- Red text message and warning symbol in the display
- No automatic gear change
- Lock-up does not work
