What does this fault code mean?
1st gear cannot be engaged properly, and the control module interprets this as clutch C3 or C4 not being engaged. The code is event-driven and does not indicate a fault in the control module where it is active.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or poor contact in the connectors to the linear pressure solenoids or the shift solenoid
- A linear pressure solenoid has stuck, or the shift solenoid has stuck in the off or on position
- One or more of the solenoids is damaged
- Poor fluid quality
- Fault inside the transmission control module (TCM) or its control system
- Mechanical faults in the transmission
What you can do
- 1Read all codes: if there are other transmission codes, deal with them first, since they may be the root fault
- 2Clear the code and road test the car in first gear with engine braking to see whether it returns
- 3Have a workshop check the solenoid connectors and wiring and the transmission's mechanics, since the fault may lie inside the transmission
Symptoms you may notice5
- No automatic gear change
- No manual gear change
- Gear changes are harsh or jerky
- Gear changes take a long time
- Gear changes happen too early, too late or too often
What the fault can affect3
- Adaptation function is blocked
- Neutral check is blocked
- The transmission engages a safe gear and holds it for a while before a new gear can be requested
