What does this fault code mean?
Second gear cannot be engaged properly: the ratio is close to that of another gear even though the control module has selected 2nd. The cause may be a solenoid stuck in the off or on position, or a mechanical fault in the transmission.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, or one of the solenoids stuck in the off or on position
- Mechanical faults in the transmission
- Damaged valve
- Electrical or hydraulic fault not yet detected
- Damaged shift mechanism
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test in second gear to see whether it returns
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the solenoids that belong to 2nd gear in the tool's test and see whether they click
- 3Have a workshop check the oil quality and level, since the level depends on the oil temperature
- 4Have a workshop check the solenoid connectors, wiring and the transmission's mechanics, since the fault may lie inside the transmission

- The emissions warning lamp (MIL) and the general warning lamp come on
- Abnormal slipping or missing gear changes
- Red text message and warning symbol in the display
- No automatic gear change
- Gear changes happen too early, too late or too often
