What does this fault code mean?
Third gear cannot be engaged properly: the control module has selected 3rd, but the ratio is close to that of another gear. The fault may be due to a solenoid that has stuck, a damaged valve or shift mechanism, or a mechanical fault in the transmission.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, or a solenoid stuck in the off or on position
- Mechanical faults in the transmission
- Damaged valve or damaged shift mechanism
- An electrical fault not yet detected
- A hydraulic fault not yet detected
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test in third gear to see whether it returns
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the solenoids that belong to 3rd gear in the tool's test and see whether they click
- 3Have a workshop check the solenoid connectors and wiring, and the oil quality and level
- 4If nothing is found there, have a workshop look at the valve and the transmission's mechanics
Symptoms you may notice5
- The emissions warning lamp (MIL) comes on
- The general warning lamp comes on
- Abnormal slipping gear changes
- Gear changes do not happen
- Gear changes take a long time to complete
What the fault can affect1
- The control module controls the transmission with an auxiliary program
