What does this fault code mean?

4th gear cannot be engaged properly, because its ratio resembles that of another gear even though the control module has selected 4th. The cause may be a solenoid that has stuck, a damaged valve or shift mechanism, or a mechanical fault in the transmission.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance, or a solenoid stuck in the off or on position
    • Mechanical faults in the transmission
    • Damaged valve
    • Damaged shift mechanism
    • An electrical or hydraulic fault not yet detected

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and clear the code, then road test in fourth gear to see whether it returns
    2. 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the solenoids that belong to 4th gear in the tool's test and check that they click
    3. 3Have a workshop check the connectors and wiring to the 4th gear solenoids, since they sit inside the transmission
    4. 4If no fault is found there, have a workshop assess the valve and the shift mechanism

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The emissions warning lamp (MIL) and the general warning lamp come on
    • Abnormal slipping gear changes
    • Gear changes do not happen
    • Red text message and warning symbol in the display
    • Gear changes happen too early, too late or too often

    What the fault can affect1

    • The control module controls the transmission with an auxiliary program

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
