What does this fault code mean?

5th gear cannot be selected properly: its ratio is close to that of another gear, even though the control module has selected 5th. The fault may be a solenoid that has stuck or has poor contact, a damaged valve or shift mechanism, or a mechanical fault in the transmission.

    Possible causes

    • A solenoid stuck in the off or on position, or with poor contact
    • Mechanical faults in the transmission
    • Damaged valve
    • An electrical fault not yet detected
    • A hydraulic fault not yet detected
    • Damaged shift mechanism

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and clear the code, then road test in fifth gear to see whether it returns
    2. 2If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the solenoids that belong to 5th gear in the tool's test and check that each gives a click
    3. 3Have a workshop check the connectors and wiring to the solenoids, and the oil quality
    4. 4If no cause is found in the connectors and wiring, have a workshop look at the transmission's internal parts

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The emissions warning lamp (MIL) comes on
    • The general warning lamp comes on
    • Abnormal slipping gear changes
    • Gear changes do not happen
    • Red text message and warning symbol in the display

    What the fault can affect1

    • The transmission is controlled by an auxiliary program

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
