What does this fault code mean?
The fault code means the transmission could not engage gear 8 correctly. It is event controlled, so it is an information code and does not show that the control module itself is faulty. The control module compares the gear ratios, and the code is set when the ratio for gear 8 is too close to the ratio of another gear. This happens because one of clutches C1, C3 or C4 engages unintentionally.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or a loose connection in the connectors to the transmission's linear pressure solenoids
- Linear pressure solenoids that are stuck or damaged
- Poor transmission fluid quality
- Fault inside the transmission controller (TCM)
- Internal fault in the transmission control system
- Mechanical faults in the transmission
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes and note any other codes from the transmission before you clear them, so the workshop can see them.
- 2Check that the connectors at the transmission are secure and not corroded.
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wiring to the transmission's solenoids has no break and no short to ground.
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the gear position and the speeds from the transmission's two sensors in live data while driving in gear 8, and check that they match.
- 5Have a workshop check the transmission fluid condition and level, as poor fluid can be behind the fault.
- 6Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the linear pressure solenoids and, if needed, the transmission mechanically.
Symptoms you may notice5
- Gear changes feel harsh or jerky
- Gear changes take a long time to complete
- Gear changes happen too early, too late or too often
- The automatic transmission does not shift at all
- Manual gear changes are not possible
What the fault can affect3
- Transmission learning (adaptation) is blocked
- The neutral control function is blocked
- A safe gear is engaged and held for a while before a new gear can be selected
