What does this fault code mean?
The start inhibit stops the car from being started while a gear is selected. The transmission control module (TCM) drives a signal to the engine control module (ECM) that says starting is allowed when the signal is grounded. The code is set when the signal is grounded all the time, so the engine control module can receive a wrong message that starting is allowed.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Fault inside the transmission controller (TCM)
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool: read the start inhibit status in live data while you move the selector between P, R, N and D.
- 2Check that the connectors in the start inhibit circuits are secure and not corroded.
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire is not shorted to ground (the body).
- 4Have a workshop check the transmission control module (TCM), as the code may be caused by an internal fault there.

- The engine does not start
- The engine starts with the selector in R or D
- Yellow warning symbol and message in the display
