What does this fault code mean?
The start inhibit is meant to stop the engine from starting with a gear engaged. The code is set when the start inhibit signal is low, which means starting is allowed, even though the gear selector is in a position other than P or N. The signal wire may be shorted to ground, have a break, or have a damaged connector.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Break in the signal wire
- Damaged connector or damaged wire
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the start inhibit signal is not low when the selector is in R or D.
- 2Inspect the wiring from the transmission to the engine control module for chafing, loose connectors and corrosion.
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire conducts all the way without a break and is not grounded to the body.
- 4Have a workshop check the transmission's mechatronic unit, as it controls the start inhibit signal and may need replacing.
