What does this fault code mean?
The fault code refers to shift solenoid S1 in the transmission, even though it is named solenoid A. The solenoids control gear changes through the transmission hydraulics, and the transmission control module (TCM) has found that the signal to S1 is too low when the solenoid is activated. The fault is general and does not say more precisely what type of fault it is.
Possible causes
- The signal cable is short-circuited to ground
- The solenoid is not working, for example because it is damaged
- The connector or circuit board is damaged or dirty
- Internal fault in the transmission's control system or in the transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Read and note the fault code, clear it and drive the car to see if it returns
- 2With a diagnostic tool: activate solenoid S1 and check that its status switches between OFF and ON. If it does not switch, the fault is likely permanent
- 3Have a workshop check the cable to solenoid S1 for a short-circuit to ground, and the connector for oxidation and dirt
- 4Have a workshop check the oil level and visually inspect the solenoid for oxidation, poor contacts, dirt and metal debris
- 5If the fault cannot be found or fixed, have a workshop replace the mechatronic unit, as the fault is then in the solenoid or the control module
Symptoms you may notice5
- General warning lamp and check engine light on
- Warning symbol and text message in the display
- Gear changes harsh or jerky, missing, or occurring too early, too late or too often
- No forward or reverse movement with a gear engaged
- The car feels underpowered, and lockup and automatic engine start/stop do not work

- Adaptation is blocked
- Neutral control is blocked
