What does this fault code mean?

The control module has noticed that the gear ratio stays the same when clutch C4 ought to have released. The fault may come from linear pressure solenoid SL4 sticking, but other parts of the transmission can also cause it. If the clutch does not disengage correctly the gear change is aborted, to prevent damage to the clutches and brakes.

    Possible causes

    • Wrong adaptation values held in the TCM memory
    • Contact resistance, oxidation or poor connection at the SL4 connector or joint
    • SL4 is stuck or damaged
    • Clutch C4 is damaged
    • Poor transmission fluid quality
    • Mechanical fault or internal fault in the transmission control system or in the TCM

    What you can do

    1. 1Read all transmission codes and deal with any other transmission codes first, as they may be the root cause
    2. 2Check the transmission oil level and the condition of the oil, and look for oil leaks
    3. 3Check that the battery is in good condition and that the fuses are intact
    4. 4If the fault returns, have a workshop reset the adaptation and check SL4 and clutch C4, and replace the mechatronic unit if needed

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • Message in the display
    • The malfunction indicator lamp (check engine light) comes on or behaves abnormally
    • The engine stalls when a gear is selected
    • The engine can stall when slowing down
    • No movement forward or in reverse with a gear selected

    What the fault can affect3

    • Gears that are not available are blocked
    • Neutral control is blocked
    • Automatic engine start and stop is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
