What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named unexpected mechanical disengagement, it means that clutch C1 has not engaged as it should. If a fault is detected, the transmission may go into neutral or use the gear that is best for the situation. The cause may be the clutch, solenoid SL1, its wiring or a mechanical fault in the transmission.
Possible causes
- Clutch C1 is damaged
- Contact resistance, oxidation or poor connection at the SL1 connector or joint
- Open circuit, short to ground or short to supply voltage in the wiring to SL1
- SL1 is damaged
- Poor transmission fluid quality
- Mechanical fault in the transmission, or internal fault in the transmission control system or in the TCM
What you can do
- 1Read all transmission codes and deal with any other transmission codes first, as they may be the root cause
- 2Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 3Check the transmission oil level and the condition of the oil, and look for oil leaks
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop check clutch C1, solenoid SL1 and the wiring to it, and replace the mechatronic unit if needed
Symptoms you may notice5
- Message in the display
- The malfunction indicator lamp (check engine light) comes on or behaves abnormally
- Poor performance, the car lacks power
- No automatic gear changes
- The lock-up function does not work
What the fault can affect3
- Gears that are not available are blocked
- The slipping lock-up function is blocked
- Automatic engine start and stop is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
