What does this fault code mean?
Gear position sensor B, which is part of the transmission control module (TCM), provides information about the selected gear position. The code shows that the signal from the sensor is too low, so the control module cannot read the gear position as it should. For this reason the engine is not allowed to start while the fault is present.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or poor connection in connectors and joints
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Misadjusted gear position sensor
- Fault inside the TCM itself
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Have a workshop check that the selector cable is correctly adjusted
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: move the selector through all positions and check in live data that the selected position is shown
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop check the signal wire to ground and the control module, and replace the transmission control module if needed
Symptoms you may notice3
- Message in the display
- The malfunction indicator lamp (check engine light) comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine does not start
What the fault can affect2
- The control module does not allow the engine to be started while the fault is active
- The control module switches to a fallback program
