What does this fault code mean?

The transmission control module (TCM) has detected that the gear ratio does not change when band brake B1 should have been disengaged. If a disengagement is not carried out correctly, the gear change is aborted so the clutches and brakes are not damaged. The fault may be caused by linear pressure solenoid SL5 sticking, but a damaged band brake or other parts of the transmission can also cause it.

    Possible causes

    • Wrong adaptation values held in the TCM memory
    • Contact resistance, oxidation or poor connection at the SL5 connector or joint
    • SL5 is stuck or damaged
    • Band brake is damaged
    • Poor transmission fluid quality
    • Mechanical fault in the transmission, or internal fault in the transmission control system or in the TCM

    What you can do

    1. 1Read all transmission codes and deal with any other transmission codes first, as they may be the root cause
    2. 2Check the transmission oil level and the condition of the oil, and look for oil leaks
    3. 3Check that the battery is in good condition and that the fuses are intact
    4. 4If the fault returns, have a workshop reset the adaptation and check SL5 and the band brake, and replace the mechatronic unit if needed

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • Message in the display
    • The malfunction indicator lamp (check engine light) comes on
    • Poor performance, the car lacks power
    • The engine stalls when a gear is selected
    • The engine can stall when slowing down

    What the fault can affect3

    • Gears that are not available are blocked
    • Neutral control is blocked
    • Automatic engine start and stop is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
