What does this fault code mean?

The transmission control module (TCM) has detected a general fault on the HS-CAN high-speed bus, which the control modules use to communicate with each other. The code gives no specific fault type, only that communication on the bus is disturbed. Because the gearbox depends on information from other modules, shifting and engine behaviour can be affected until communication is restored.

Possible causes

Short circuit between the CAN wires
Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
The gearbox control module (TCM) itself is faulty

What you can do

1Read codes from all control modules and deal with the other modules first, as CAN faults often set several codes at once
2Check the battery charge and that the battery terminals are tight
3Check the connectors and wiring harness to the gearbox control module for looseness, corrosion and chafing, especially where the wiring bends
4Have a workshop measure the resistance of the CAN network, as this needs diagnostic equipment
5Clear the code only once the fault has been fixed, and check that it does not return
