System
Upper Electronic Module (UEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The upper electronic module (UEM) periodically tests the communication with the rain sensor. The code is set when the signal wire to the rain sensor is short-circuited to ground, and the rain sensor then does not work. A faulty rain sensor can also be the cause.
Possible causes
- The rain sensor's signal wire is short-circuited to ground
- Faulty rain sensor
What you can do
- 1Put the wiper stalk in position 0, clear the code and check whether it returns.
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the rain sensor has no contact with ground (the bodywork).
- 3Check that the connectors at the rain sensor and at the control module are firmly seated and not corroded.
- 4Look for damage on the rain sensor wiring, which consists of two wires.
- 5If no other fault is found, have a workshop replace the rain sensor.
Symptoms you may notice1
- The rain sensor does not work
What the fault can affect2
- The windshield wipers run intermittently
- The windshield wipers may run at high speed
