UEM-E001
VOLVO
UEM-E001 - Control module communication. Faulty communication
System
Upper Electronic Module (UEM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The control modules in the car send and receive information over the CAN network. The code is set when serious interference blocks the CAN communication. Communication with the module is then impossible, and several functions in the car can stop working.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the control module
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read off the codes in the car and check whether any codes about lost communication sit in the central electronic module (CEM). If so, fault-trace those first.
- 2Look for chafed spots and loose contacts on the CAN wires.
- 3If the fault remains, have a workshop check the CAN wires for short circuits and breaks.
- 4If no fault is found in the wires, have a workshop check the control modules on the CAN network, since the fault may lie in another module on the same network.
Symptoms you may notice5
- The remote control cannot operate the car
- The interior lighting does not work
- The electric sun roof does not work
- The alarm does not work at all
- The rain sensor does not work
What the fault can affect2
- The control module switches itself off, so-called bus-off
- The control module stays off until the power supply is broken, and only on new power-up does it try to communicate again
