Technical Description
P02A9 indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has reached the maximum enrichment limit for the fuel trim on cylinder number 4. The ECU is attempting to compensate for an excessively lean condition (too much air or too little fuel) specifically in this cylinder. It increases the injector pulse width to maintain a balanced air-fuel ratio, but when the compensation exceeds a calibrated threshold (typically +25% to +30%), the code is stored. Unlike bank-specific lean codes, P02A9 points to an issue localized to cylinder 4, such as a localized vacuum leak or an injector restricted by deposits.
Possible Causes
Clogged or faulty fuel injector for cylinder 4
Intake manifold vacuum leak localized at cylinder 4
Faulty spark plug or ignition coil causing incomplete combustion (misinterpreted as lean by O2 sensor)
Internal engine mechanical issue (e.g., leaking valve or low compression) on cylinder 4
Damaged wiring or poor electrical connection to injector 4
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the intake manifold and vacuum lines near cylinder 4 for cracks or leaks. Inspect the injector electrical connector for oxidation.
- Electrical Testing: Measure the injector's internal resistance (Ohm). It should typically be 11–18 Ohms. Verify 12V supply and check the ground trigger (Duty cycle) using an oscilloscope.
- Swap Test: Swap the ignition coil and spark plug between cylinder 4 and a known good cylinder to rule out ignition issues.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Perform a fuel injector balance test using a scan tool to monitor flow rates. Conduct a compression or leak-down test on cylinder 4.
- Repair: Clean or replace the fuel injector for cylinder 4. Reset fuel trim adaptations in the ECU after replacement.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
