Technical Description
P02C4 indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has reached its maximum enrichment limit for Cylinder 10. The ECU is attempting to compensate for an excessively lean condition by increasing the injector pulse width (duty cycle). When the fuel trim reaches its positive ceiling and cannot compensate further, this code is triggered. This usually points to a restricted fuel injector, an air leak near that cylinder, or an ignition-related misfire that the ECU interprets as a lean condition due to unburned oxygen.
Possible Causes
Clogged or faulty fuel injector (Cylinder 10)
Intake vacuum leak specifically affecting cylinder 10
Faulty spark plug or ignition coil causing a misfire (excess oxygen in exhaust)
Mechanical engine problem (e.g., leaking valve or low compression on cylinder 10)
Wiring issue in the injector circuit (high resistance)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check for vacuum leaks near cylinder 10 intake port. Inspect injector electrical connectors for corrosion.
- Measurements: Test injector resistance (typically 11-16 Ohms). Use an oscilloscope to verify the injector pulse width and signal integrity.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Perform a fuel injector balance test. Use a smoke machine to find vacuum leaks specifically at the intake manifold runner for cylinder 10.
- Action: Swap the injector from cylinder 10 to a different cylinder. If the code follows the injector, replace the injector. If not, investigate ignition or mechanical compression issues.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
