Technical Description
P0369 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for an intermittent signal from the Camshaft Position Sensor 'B' on Bank 1. Sensor 'B' typically refers to the exhaust camshaft sensor. The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) monitors the camshaft position to synchronize fuel injector firing and ignition timing. When the signal is erratic or drops out momentarily, the PCM cannot maintain engine timing accuracy. This often leads to a 'Limp mode' condition, disabling VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and potentially affecting CAN-bus communication between the PCM and Transmission Control Module (TCM).
Possible Causes
Faulty Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor (internal thermal failure)
Damaged wiring harness or loose connector pins
Incorrect air gap between the sensor and the reluctor wheel
Mechanical wear on the camshaft reluctor wheel or excessive axial play
Poor oil quality or incorrect viscosity affecting VVT actuator stability
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness for signs of fraying and ensure the sensor connector is secure and free from corrosion.
- Measurement: Check for reference voltage (typically 5V or 12V) and a solid ground at the connector with the ignition ON.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use an oscilloscope to monitor the square wave signal while the engine is running or by performing a 'wiggle test' on the harness.
- Component Replacement: Replace the CMP sensor with an OEM quality part if the signal shows dropouts. Erase codes and perform a camshaft relearn procedure if required by the manufacturer.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
