Technical Description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) compares the actual airflow reading from the MAF sensor with calculated values based on engine speed (RPM), throttle position (TPS), and manifold absolute pressure (MAP). DTC P0101 triggers when the measured airflow deviates by more than 15-20% from the expected baseline model.

Engine mechanical timing error (stretched timing chain or skipped belt tooth)

Recommended Solution
Perform an intake smoke test to locate any unmetered air leaks between MAF, intercooler, and intake manifold.
Monitor live MAF flow (g/s) and compare against theoretical baseline calculations across the RPM range.
Check Short Term and Long Term Fuel Trims (STFT/LTFT). High positive trims indicate vacuum leaks.
Inspect air filter condition and clean throttle body from carbon buildup.
Perform a full-throttle logging run to verify peak airflow (g/s) meets expected horsepower target.
Mechanic's Tip
A proven diagnostic rule of thumb for naturally aspirated gasoline engines: Peak MAF reading in g/s at redline should approximately equal 0.8 × engine rated horsepower (e.g. a 200 hp engine should reach ~160 g/s at WOT). Significant under-reading indicates a degraded MAF sensor.
