Technical Description
P0121 is set when the ECM/PCM detects that the Throttle Position Sensor 'A' (TPS) signal is out of the expected range or not correlating with the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor or other throttle position sensors. The ECM performs a rationality check to ensure the throttle blade position matches the driver's input and engine load. If the signal voltage (typically 0.5V to 4.5V) deviates from the MAP-calculated expected value for a specific duration, the code is stored. This often triggers a 'Limp Mode' or 'Reduced Power Mode' to ensure safety, restricting throttle plate movement through the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) logic.
Possible Causes
Carbon buildup or dirt in the throttle body causing the butterfly valve to stick.
Faulty Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) – often an internal failure in the electronic throttle body.
High resistance or corrosion in the wiring harness or connectors.
Faulty MAP sensor providing incorrect correlation data to the ECM.
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual inspection: Check the throttle body electrical connector for corrosion. Clean the internal bore and plate of the throttle body using specialized cleaner to remove carbon deposits.
- Measurement: Verify 5V reference voltage from the ECM. Monitor signal voltage; typically starts at 0.5V (closed) and should rise linearly to approx. 4.5V (WOT) without jumping.
- Advanced diagnosis: Use an oscilloscope to look for 'noise' or signal dropouts while slowly sweeping the throttle.
- Action: If cleaning fails and signal is erratic, replace the throttle body assembly. Perform a 'Throttle Relearn' procedure using a scan tool after replacement.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
