Technical Description
P0122 is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects that the voltage signal from the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) circuit 'A' is below the minimum calibrated limit, typically less than 0.2V to 0.4V. The TPS is a potentiometer that provides a variable voltage signal representing throttle plate angle. This input is critical for fuel strategy, ignition timing, and transmission shift points. When the signal drops too low, the system enters fail-safe or 'Limp Mode' to prevent unintended acceleration or engine damage, often disabling cruise control and limiting RPM.
Possible Causes
Faulty Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) due to internal open circuit or worn tracks
Signal wire shorted to ground or open circuit in the 5V reference wire
Corroded or loose connectors at the throttle body
Misaligned sensor installation or internal PCM failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check wiring harness and connector at the TPS for chafing, corrosion, or backed-out pins.
- Voltage Test (Reference): Measure reference voltage at the connector with a multimeter. It should be 5.0V ± 0.1V. If 0V, check wiring back to PCM.
- Signal Test: Use a scan tool (Live Data) or oscilloscope to observe the signal sweep. With key on/engine off, voltage should rise smoothly from approx. 0.5V to 4.5V as the throttle is opened. Dropouts indicate a faulty sensor.
- Ground Test: Confirm a solid ground at the sensor (near 0 Ohms).
- Action: Clean throttle body and connector; replace TPS or throttle body assembly if values are out of spec. Perform a throttle body relearn/adaptation after replacement.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
