Technical Description
P0128 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the engine coolant temperature (ECT) fails to reach the required operating temperature level within a calibrated amount of time after starting the engine. The ECM monitors the warm-up cycle based on intake air temperature (IAT), engine run time, and vehicle speed. If the coolant temperature does not exceed a threshold (typically around 160-170°F / 71-77°C), the ECM determines the thermostat is likely stuck open or opening prematurely. This prevents the engine from entering 'Closed Loop' fuel control efficiently, leading to increased emissions and fuel consumption.

Low coolant level or air pockets in the cooling system
Cooling fan running continuously
Faulty Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor providing incorrect reference data
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Check coolant level and inspect the thermostat housing for leaks.
- Use a scan tool to monitor ECT live data during engine warm-up. At operating temp, sensor resistance should typically be 200-300 Ohms.
- Verify thermostat operation: Feel the upper radiator hose. It should remain cool until the engine reaches approx. 180-195°F (82-90°C), then get hot rapidly.
- Check cooling fan operation to ensure it is not running prematurely or constantly.
- Replace the thermostat (most common fix) and perform a coolant bleed procedure.
