Technical Description
P0130 is a generic OBD-II code indicating the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a circuit malfunction within the upstream Oxygen (O2) sensor for Bank 1. This sensor is responsible for monitoring exhaust gas oxygen content to adjust fuel trim. The ECU expects the sensor voltage to oscillate between 0.1V (lean) and 0.9V (rich). If the voltage remains static or the circuit is open/shorted, the ECU loses its ability to manage the air-fuel ratio effectively, often forcing the engine into 'Limp Mode' or open-loop operation.
Possible Causes
Faulty Oxygen (O2) sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1)
Damaged wiring harness or corroded connectors (moisture ingress)
Faulty heater circuit within the sensor
Exhaust leak upstream of the sensor affecting readings
Internal ECU failure causing circuit monitoring errors

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
