Technical Description
The P0133 code indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a slow response rate from the upstream oxygen (O2) sensor on Bank 1. The ECU monitors the frequency at which the sensor's voltage oscillates between lean (approx. 0.1V) and rich (approx. 0.9V) conditions during closed-loop operation. If the response time for these transitions exceeds the calibrated limit, the fault code is stored. A slow O2 sensor delays fuel trim adjustments, leading to inefficient combustion, increased emissions (NOx and CO), and potentially damaging the catalytic converter over time.
Possible Causes
Faulty or contaminated Oxygen Sensor (O2) due to age or carbon buildup.
Exhaust leak upstream of or near the sensor, introducing ambient air.
Faulty sensor heater circuit delaying optimal operating temperature.
Intake air leak (vacuum leak) after the Mass Air Flow sensor.
Damaged wiring or corrosion in the sensor connector.

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
