Technical Description
P0192 is stored when the ECM/PCM detects that the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor signal voltage remains below the calibrated limit (typically <0.2V to 0.5V) for a specific duration. The sensor uses a 5V reference wire, a ground wire, and a signal wire. A 'Low' input code usually indicates a short to ground on the signal wire, a loss of the 5V reference, or an internal sensor failure. Since the ECM relies on this data for closed-loop fuel pressure control, it will often default to a safe-mode strategy, limiting engine RPM and power to prevent mechanical damage to the common rail system.
Possible Causes
Faulty Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor (internal short)
Wiring harness issue (short to ground on signal wire)
High resistance/oxidation in the sensor connector
Loss of 5V reference voltage from the ECM
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- VISUAL INSPECTION: Inspect wiring and connectors at the fuel rail pressure sensor for signs of corrosion, damaged insulation, or loose pins.
- VOLTAGE TEST: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter (ignition ON). Verify 5V reference voltage and a solid ground. If 5V is missing, trace back to the ECM.
- SIGNAL ANALYSIS: Use a scan tool or oscilloscope to monitor 'FRP' live data. If voltage is static at 0V while cranking/running, the sensor or signal wire is likely grounded.
- COMPONENT REPLACEMENT: If wiring and 5V reference are within spec, replace the fuel rail pressure sensor.
- FINAL CHECK: Clear codes and perform a road test while monitoring fuel pressure delivery values.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
