Technical Description
P0301 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for 'Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected'. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor to detect fluctuations in the crankshaft's rotational speed. A successful combustion stroke results in a brief acceleration of the crankshaft; a misfire is identified when this acceleration is absent for cylinder 1. If the misfire rate exceeds regulatory thresholds, the ECU stores the code and triggers the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). Severe misfires may cause the MIL to flash, indicating potential damage to the three-way catalytic converter (TWC) due to raw fuel entering the exhaust stream.
Possible Causes
Faulty spark plug or ignition coil on cylinder 1.
Clogged, leaking, or faulty fuel injector on cylinder 1.
Intake air leak (vacuum leak) specifically affecting cylinder 1.
Mechanical engine problem (low compression, burnt valves, or worn camshaft lobe).
Wiring harness issues or corroded connectors for the ignition/fuel circuit.

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
