Technical Description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) to detect fluctuations in rotational speed. A decrease in crankshaft velocity during the power stroke of cylinder 2 indicates a misfire event. P0302 is a generic OBD-II code confirming that cylinder 2 is failing to fire properly. If the misfire is severe enough to damage the catalytic converter, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will flash. This code can be caused by ignition system failure, fuel delivery issues, or internal engine mechanical problems.
Possible Causes
Faulty spark plug or ignition coil (Coil-on-plug) on cylinder 2
Clogged or defective fuel injector
Faulty ignition wires or poor connector contact
Internal engine mechanical failure (Low compression, leaking valves, or worn camshaft)
Vacuum leak specifically affecting cylinder 2 intake

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
