Technical Description
P0305 is a standardized OBD-II code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a misfire event on cylinder number 5. The ECU monitors the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor for minute variations in rotational speed during each cylinder's power stroke. If cylinder 5 fails to produce the expected acceleration, the misfire counter for that cylinder increases. A high misfire rate can cause the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) to flash, indicating potential damage to the three-way catalytic converter (TWC) due to unburned fuel entering the exhaust stream.
Possible Causes
Faulty ignition coil (COP) or ignition wire on cylinder 5
Worn or fouled spark plug
Defective fuel injector (electrical or mechanical failure)
Compression loss (burnt valves, piston ring issues) or intake manifold vacuum leak
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- 2. Swapping test: Swap the ignition coil from cylinder 5 with cylinder 1. Clear codes and check if the code changes to P0301. 3. Measurement: Inspect spark plug condition (gap, carbon tracking). 4. Advanced diagnosis: Use an oscilloscope to verify primary ignition trigger and injector pulse width. 5. Action: Replace faulty component and clear adaptive memory if applicable.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
