Technical Description
The ECM monitors EGR flow by measuring the reduction in fresh air mass (MAF drop) or change in manifold pressure (MAP) when the EGR valve commands open. P0401 triggers when expected flow reduction fails to materialize due to soot clogs or stuck valves.

Remove EGR valve and inspect for carbon blockage and sticky pintle shaft.
Clean carbon buildup from EGR tubes and intake manifold ports using solvent.
Mechanic's Tip
The definitive EGR functional test at idle: Manually command the EGR valve 100% open. If the engine stumbles heavily or stalls out, the EGR passages are clear. If the engine idle does not change at all, the ports are completely blocked with carbon.
