Technical Description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system efficiency by tracking manifold pressure (MAP sensor) changes or mass airflow (MAF sensor) variations when the EGR valve is commanded open. Code P0401 is triggered when the ECM detects that the flow rate of recirculated exhaust gas is below the calibrated threshold. High combustion temperatures and increased Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions are the primary consequences. Diagnostics often rely on a Delta Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor or MAP/MAF correlation logic during deceleration or specific load conditions.

- Cleaning: Remove the EGR valve and intake passages to clear carbon deposits. Check the EGR cooler for blockages.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use a scan tool to command the EGR valve open at idle; the engine should stumble or stall if the flow is sufficient.
- Component Replacement: Replace the EGR valve, solenoid, or sensor if electrical or mechanical failure is confirmed.
