Technical Description
P0403 is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an electrical abnormality in the EGR valve control circuit. This specifically concerns the solenoid or electric motor that actuates the EGR valve. The ECU monitors current draw and voltage levels; if these fall outside specified parameters (indicating a short circuit to ground, short to voltage, or an open circuit), the code is triggered. This fault inhibits the precise regulation of EGR flow, which is critical for reducing NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) emissions.
Possible Causes
Electrical failure within the EGR valve itself (internal short or open coil)
Damaged wiring harness (chafed wires or corrosion in connectors)
Faulty EGR vacuum control solenoid (on vacuum-actuated systems)
Failed ECU output driver

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
