Technical Description
P0405 is stored when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the voltage signal from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) position sensor is lower than the calibrated limit (typically below 0.2V to 0.4V). The EGR system recirculates exhaust gases into the intake manifold to lower combustion temperatures, reducing Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions. The ECU monitors the EGR valve position via a potentiometer. A 'low' signal indicates a potential short to ground, open circuit, or a failed sensor internal to the EGR assembly.

Short to ground in the EGR sensor signal circuit
Failed EGR position sensor (often integrated within the EGR valve)
Open circuit in the 5V reference wire from the ECU
Corrosion in the connector or damaged wiring harness

Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the EGR connector for oxidation or bent pins. Inspect the wiring harness for chafing or heat damage.
- Reference Voltage Test: Disconnect the EGR connector and measure with a multimeter (ignition ON). You should find a stable 5V reference and a solid ground connection.
- Signal Verification: Measure the signal wire. When activating the valve via a scanner, the voltage should sweep linearly (typically from 0.5V to 4.5V).
- Cleaning/Replacement: If the sensor outputs incorrect values despite proper power/ground, clean soot from the valve. If faulty, replace the EGR assembly. A basic setting/adaptation via a diagnostic tool is usually required after replacement.
