Technical Description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the catalyst efficiency by comparing the signals from the upstream (pre-cat) and downstream (post-cat) oxygen sensors. P0421 specifically refers to the 'Warm Up Catalyst', typically located close to the exhaust manifold to reach operating temperature quickly. When the catalyst is functioning correctly, the downstream sensor signal should be relatively stable. If the downstream sensor starts switching voltage (between 0.1V and 0.9V) mirroring the upstream sensor, it indicates the catalyst's oxygen storage capacity has degraded or it cannot effectively convert emissions (HC, CO, NOx) during the warm-up phase.
Possible Causes
Defective Warm Up Catalyst (Bank 1)
Exhaust leak upstream of or near the catalyst
Faulty downstream oxygen sensor (O2 sensor)
Engine performance issues causing catalyst degradation (e.g., misfires or excessive oil consumption)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
