    P0650 - MIL Control Circuit/Open

Related:MIL Control Circuit/Open, Wiring harness and connectors, Control Module (ECM/PCM)

    System

    Powertrain (Engine & Gearbox)

    Technical Description

The control module has detected a fault in the MIL Control Circuit/Open (P0650). The module sees no circuit at all — broken wire, backed-out pin, or a failed sensor.

    MIL Control Circuit/Open – Ignition-Switched SupplyVoltage (V)
    Nominal Target:11.8 - 14.4 V

    Ignition ON

MIL Control Circuit/Open – Ground Connections Voltage DropVoltage (V)
    Nominal Target:< 0.1 V per ground point

    Under load to battery negative

    MIL Control Circuit/Open – 5 V Reference OutputsVoltage (V)

    Oscilloscope Waveform Analysis

    500 ms/div, 5 V/div
Log module supply voltage during cranking and load changes. It must not fall below 9.5 V on start or carry high-frequency noise that disturbs the processor.

    Possible Causes

    1

Open circuit, damaged wiring harness, or disconnected plug at MIL Control Circuit/Open

    2

Chafed or pinched wiring harness along the signal path to MIL Control Circuit/Open

    3

Poor ground connection or excessive voltage drop (> 0.1 V) at the ground point for MIL Control Circuit/Open

    4

Defective internal output driver or reference circuit in the control module for MIL Control Circuit/Open

    Symptoms

    4
Circuit open detected; control module enters failsafe default strategy
    Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
    Possible drivability or power reduction
Risk of failing an emissions inspection

    Recommended Solution

    1

Verify continuity (< 0.5 Ω) on the signal wire between the component plug and the ECM header connector.

    2

Verify loaded supply voltage and harness terminal pins at MIL Control Circuit/Open.

    3

Check circuit continuity and ground-side voltage drop (< 0.05 V) for MIL Control Circuit/Open.

    4

Inspect module enclosure and connector headers for water ingress, fretting corrosion, or PCB thermal damage.

    Mechanic's Tip

When facing a 5V reference supply DTC, never replace the module first. A shorted external sensor (such as A/C pressure or EGR position) drags down the shared 5V internal rail. Unplug sensors one by one until 5V recovers.
