P2202 - NOx Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor '1')
System
Powertrain (Engine & Gearbox)
Technical Description
The control module has detected a fault in the NOx Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor '1') (P2202). The signal is below the lower threshold, typically from a short to ground or an internally shorted sensor. Pertains to upstream oxygen sensor (pre-catalyst regulation sensor) governing real-time closed-loop air-fuel ratio.

Oscilloscope Waveform Analysis
1 s/div, 200 mV/divPossible Causes
Short to ground on the signal wire or an internal short circuit within NOx Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor '1')
Bank 1 specific:Inspect wiring harness to cylinder bank 1 (firewall/right bank, exposed to exhaust manifold heat).
Sensor 1 (Upstream pre-cat):Directly exposed to raw exhaust gases. Check for carbon fouling or pre-sensor manifold exhaust leaks.
Chafed or pinched wiring harness along the signal path to NOx Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor '1')
Poor ground connection or excessive voltage drop (> 0.1 V) at the ground point for NOx Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor '1')
Defective internal output driver or reference circuit in the control module for NOx Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor '1')
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
Observe closed-loop sensor voltage switching at 2500 RPM (0.1–0.9 V at 1–3 Hz). Check STFT and LTFT fuel trims.
Cross-swap the component on Bank 1 with Bank 2 to rule out mechanical oil passages and internal timing wear.
Measure signal wire resistance to chassis ground with connector unplugged (must exceed 10 kΩ; low reading confirms short to ground).
Verify loaded supply voltage and harness terminal pins at NOx Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor '1').
Check circuit continuity and ground-side voltage drop (< 0.05 V) for NOx Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor '1').
For wideband sensors:monitor pump current (mA) and lambda in scan Live Data during snap-throttle and decel fuel cut.
Mechanic's Tip
O2 sensors measure free oxygen, not fuel. An exhaust leak upstream of the sensor pulls in atmospheric air via venturi pulses, forcing false lean readings and causing the ECM to severely over-fuel.
