P2212 - NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 Sensor '1')

Related:NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 Sensor '1'), Wiring harness and connectors, Control Module (ECM/PCM)

    System

    Powertrain (Engine & Gearbox)

    Technical Description

The control module has detected a fault in the NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 Sensor '1') (P2212). The fault is sporadic — usually a loose terminal, corrosion, or a chafed wire breaking contact under vibration or temperature change. Pertains to upstream oxygen sensor (pre-catalyst regulation sensor) governing real-time closed-loop air-fuel ratio.

    Oscilloscope Waveform Analysis

    1 s/div, 200 mV/div
Scope the signal on a warm engine at 2000 RPM. A healthy NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 Sensor '1') swings between 0.1 V and 0.9 V at least 8 times in 10 seconds; a lazy or flat trace indicates sensor aging or carbon buildup.

    Possible Causes

    1

Loose terminal pin, vibration fretting, or moisture corrosion inside NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 Sensor '1') connector

    2

Bank 1 specific:Inspect wiring harness to cylinder bank 1 (firewall/right bank, exposed to exhaust manifold heat).

    3

Sensor 1 (Upstream pre-cat):Directly exposed to raw exhaust gases. Check for carbon fouling or pre-sensor manifold exhaust leaks.

    4

Chafed or pinched wiring harness along the signal path to NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 Sensor '1')

    5

Poor ground connection or excessive voltage drop (> 0.1 V) at the ground point for NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 Sensor '1')

    6

Defective internal output driver or reference circuit in the control module for NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 Sensor '1')

    Symptoms

    5
Intermittent warning lamp triggering over bumps, vibration, or temperature shifts
Increased fuel consumption (+15–20%), black exhaust carbon, and hesitating throttle response in closed-loop.
    Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
    Possible drivability or power reduction
Risk of failing an emissions inspection

    Recommended Solution

    1

Observe closed-loop sensor voltage switching at 2500 RPM (0.1–0.9 V at 1–3 Hz). Check STFT and LTFT fuel trims.

    2

Cross-swap the component on Bank 1 with Bank 2 to rule out mechanical oil passages and internal timing wear.

    3

Perform a loaded harness wiggle test while monitoring signal trace on a fast scan-tool graph or oscilloscope.

    4

Verify loaded supply voltage and harness terminal pins at NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 Sensor '1').

    5

Check circuit continuity and ground-side voltage drop (< 0.05 V) for NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 Sensor '1').

    6

For wideband sensors:monitor pump current (mA) and lambda in scan Live Data during snap-throttle and decel fuel cut.

    Mechanic's Tip

O2 sensors measure free oxygen, not fuel. An exhaust leak upstream of the sensor pulls in atmospheric air via venturi pulses, forcing false lean readings and causing the ECM to severely over-fuel.
