P2504 - Charging System Voltage High

Related:Charging System Voltage High, Wiring harness and connectors, Control Module (ECM/PCM)

    System

    Powertrain (Engine & Gearbox)

    Technical Description

The control module has detected a fault in the Charging System Voltage High (P2504). The signal is above the upper threshold, typically from an open circuit, poor connection, or a short to battery voltage. The underlying code points specifically at the vehicle system voltage (charging system).

Log module supply voltage during cranking and load changes. It must not fall below 9.5 V on start or carry high-frequency noise that disturbs the processor.

    Possible Causes

    1

A worn alternator, a poor main ground, or corroded battery terminals giving low or unstable charging voltage

    2

Open circuit on signal wire, spread terminal pin, or short to power feed at Charging System Voltage High

    3

Chafed or pinched wiring harness along the signal path to Charging System Voltage High

    4

Poor ground connection or excessive voltage drop (> 0.1 V) at the ground point for Charging System Voltage High

    5

Defective internal output driver or reference circuit in the control module for Charging System Voltage High

    Symptoms

    4
Sensor signal is pegged at the upper voltage limit (5 V / supply rail)
    Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
    Possible drivability or power reduction
Risk of failing an emissions inspection

    Recommended Solution

    1

Measure battery voltage at idle and 2000 rpm with and without load (target 13.8–14.6 V); measure voltage drop on the alternator positive and ground cables (< 0.3 V).

    2

Measure signal terminal voltage with ignition ON and sensor unplugged to determine if ECM pull-up is active or harness is shorted to 12V.

    3

Verify loaded supply voltage and harness terminal pins at Charging System Voltage High.

    4

Check circuit continuity and ground-side voltage drop (< 0.05 V) for Charging System Voltage High.

    5

Inspect module enclosure and connector headers for water ingress, fretting corrosion, or PCB thermal damage.

    Mechanic's Tip

Always test voltage drop in the charging cables before condemning the alternator — a corroded main ground sets the exact same code as a tired alternator.
