    P2681 - Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open

Related:Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open, Wiring harness and connectors, Control Module (ECM/PCM)

    System

    Powertrain (Engine & Gearbox)

    Technical Description

The control module has detected a fault in the Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open (P2681). The module sees no circuit at all — broken wire, backed-out pin, or a failed sensor.

    Oscilloscope Waveform Analysis

    100 ms/div, 1 V/div
Capture the Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open signal through a slow sweep of its operating range. The trace must be smooth with no dropouts to 0 V or 5 V.

    Possible Causes

    1

Open circuit, damaged wiring harness, or disconnected plug at Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open

    2

Channel A:Verify dedicated wiring pins and signal pair for circuit A against the schematic.

    3

Chafed or pinched wiring harness along the signal path to Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open

    4

Poor ground connection or excessive voltage drop (> 0.1 V) at the ground point for Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open

    5

Defective internal output driver or reference circuit in the control module for Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open

    Symptoms

    4
Circuit open detected; control module enters failsafe default strategy
    Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
    Possible drivability or power reduction
Risk of failing an emissions inspection

    Recommended Solution

    1

Compare signal voltage and resistance between circuit A and companion circuit B at module connector.

    2

Verify continuity (< 0.5 Ω) on the signal wire between the component plug and the ECM header connector.

    3

Verify loaded supply voltage and harness terminal pins at Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open.

    4

Check circuit continuity and ground-side voltage drop (< 0.05 V) for Engine Coolant Bypass Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open.

    5

Unplug the sensor:the signal must swing to a known rail. Replace the sensor or repair the wiring based on the result.

    Mechanic's Tip

Always run a loaded voltage-drop test on the sensor ground with ignition ON. A drop above 0.1 V shifts the whole signal and tricks the module into setting sensor codes on a good sensor.
