What does this fault code mean?
At some point the central electronic module (CEM) could not read the key's transponder correctly when the ignition was switched on. The fault is intermittent – that start attempt failed, but the car may start normally now. The usual cause is several keys or other electronics interfering with the reading.
Possible causes
- Several keys close together produced a mixed, unknown transponder code
- Electronic door key, toll tag or similar device near the ignition switch
- A key that is not programmed to the car, or has been deleted, was used
- Damaged transponder in one of the keys
- Temporary electrical interference during starting
What you can do
- 1Try starting with each of the car's keys on its own – if all work, the fault was most likely interference
- 2Let other keys and tags hang freely or remove them from the key ring
- 3If only some keys work, check the type and programming of the others
- 4Clear the code; if it returns often, have the keys and the antenna unit checked by a workshop
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine did not start on one occasion
What the fault can affect1
- The immobiliser prevented starting on that occasion
