Technical Description
P010B is stored when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the signal from Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor 'B' is outside of the expected range or is not correlating with sensor 'A'. In dual-intake systems, the ECU monitors both sensors to ensure balanced air delivery. If sensor 'B' reports a flow rate that deviates significantly from the calculated air mass (based on RPM, TPS, and MAP), the code is triggered. This diagnostic focuses on 'Range/Performance', meaning the sensor is producing a signal, but the signal is implausible or inconsistent with engine operating conditions.
Possible Causes
Dirty or contaminated MAF sensor element (common with oiled aftermarket filters).
Unmetered air leak (vacuum leak) between the sensor and the throttle body.
Faulty MAF sensor B.
Wiring issues, such as high resistance or poor grounding in the MAF circuit.
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- STEP 1: Inspect the air intake ducting for cracks or loose clamps (vacuum leaks). Ensure the air filter is properly seated.
- STEP 2: Clean MAF sensor B using a dedicated MAF cleaner spray. DO NOT touch the internal wire element.
- STEP 3: Monitor Live Data using a scan tool. At idle, a 2.0L engine should show approx. 2-5 g/s. Compare sensor A and B readings; they should be within 10% of each other. Test signal voltage: typically 0.5V (KOEO) to 4.0V+ (WOT).
- STEP 4: Check for 5V or 12V reference voltage and a solid ground at the sensor connector.
- STEP 5: If the signal remains implausible despite cleaning and intake integrity, replace MAF sensor B with an OEM unit.
Mechanic's Tip
