Technical Description
P0110 indicates a circuit malfunction in the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. The ECU monitors the voltage return from this NTC thermistor. A normal operating range is typically between 0.1V and 4.9V. If the signal exceeds these parameters, the ECU can no longer accurately calculate air density, which is critical for the stoichiometric ratio (Lambda 1.0). The system will often default to a preset backup value to maintain engine operation, affecting performance and emissions. The sensor is often integrated into the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or located in the air intake boot.
Possible Causes
Defective IAT sensor (frequently integrated with the MAF sensor)
Wiring harness issues, such as chafing or terminal corrosion
Open ground circuit to the sensor
Internal ECU failure causing incorrect reference voltage
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the connector at the IAT/MAF sensor for corrosion or bent pins.
- Voltage Test: With ignition ON, check for a 5V reference signal and a solid ground at the sensor plug.
- Resistance Test: Measure sensor resistance using a Multimeter. At 68°F (20°C), it should be approx. 2k-3k Ohms. Infinite resistance (OL) indicates an open circuit within the sensor.
- Live Data Analysis: Use a scan tool to monitor IAT readings. A constant -40°C suggests an open circuit, while +150°C suggest a short circuit.
- Replacement: Replace the sensor if it fails the resistance or sweep test.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
