Technical Description
P0111 is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor 1 signal is outside the expected rational range or is sticking. The ECM compares the IAT reading against the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) and Ambient Air Temperature (AAT) at cold start. If the readings deviate significantly (typically more than 10-15°C) or if the sensor value fails to fluctuate as intake air temperature changes during vehicle operation, the code is stored. The sensor is a thermistor that changes resistance based on temperature; the ECM provides a 5V reference and monitors the voltage drop.
Possible Causes
Dirty or faulty IAT sensor (often integrated into the MAF sensor)
Poor connection or corrosion in the sensor connector
Clogged air filter or restricted intake affecting air flow over the sensor
Wiring issues (short or open circuit) or internal ECM fault
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check air filter, intake hoses, and the IAT/MAF sensor connector for dirt, corrosion, or damage.
- Measurement (Multimeter): Verify 5V reference voltage and ground at the connector. Check sensor resistance; typically 2000-3000 Ohms at 20°C (check specific OEM values).
- Live Data (Scanner): Compare IAT sensor readings with ECT at startup. Monitor values during a test drive; they should fluctuate slightly with load and speed.
- Cleaning/Replacement: Clean the sensor using dedicated MAF/Electronic cleaner. If values remain static or irrational, replace the sensor.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
