Technical Description
P0114 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an erratic or intermittent signal voltage from the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. The IAT is a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistor where resistance decreases as temperature increases. The ECM provides a 5V reference; if the return signal shows sudden jumps or drops that are physically impossible in a short timeframe, the circuit is flagged as intermittent. This affects the calculation of air density, which is crucial for fuel injection pulse width and ignition timing calibration.
Possible Causes
Loose connection or corrosion in the IAT sensor connector
Faulty IAT sensor (internal thermal expansion/vibration failure)
Damaged wiring harness (chafed insulation or intermittent short to ground)
Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor (if IAT is integrated)
Internal ECM hardware failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
