Technical Description
P0119 is stored when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an erratic or intermittent signal from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. The ECU monitors the voltage drop across the sensor (a thermistor); if the signal fluctuates rapidly outside of normal physical parameters (e.g., jumping from 40°F to 220°F instantly), the logic determines a circuit fault. This often triggers failsafe measures such as running cooling fans at maximum speed and using substitute temperature values for fuel mapping and ignition timing.
Possible Causes
Loose connection or corrosion in the ECT sensor connector
Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (internal intermittent failure)
Damaged wiring harness (chaffing against engine or frame)
Low coolant level or air pockets in the cooling system passing the sensor
Internal Engine Control Unit (ECU) fault
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the ECT sensor connector for corrosion or backed-out pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.
- Voltage Test: Verify the 5.0V reference signal from the ECU at the connector with the sensor unplugged and ignition on.
- Resistance Test: Measure sensor resistance (Ohms) while wiggling the harness to check for internall/external breaks. At 68°F (20°C), resistance should typically be 2000-3000 Ohms.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use a scan tool to monitor live graph data for the ECT. Look for sharp vertical spikes that indicate signal loss.
- Replacement: Replace the ECT sensor if internal failure is suspected, or repair the wiring harness.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
