Technical Description
P011A is stored when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an implausible discrepancy between the readings of Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor 1 and ECT sensor 2. ECT 1 is typically located on the engine block or cylinder head, while ECT 2 is often found at the radiator outlet. The ECU monitors both sensors during warmup and steady-state operation; if the temperature delta exceeds a predetermined threshold (typically 10°C to 20°C depending on OEM maps), the correlation fault is triggered. This discrepancy affects fueling strategies, ignition timing, and cooling fan duty cycles.
Possible Causes
Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (ECT 1 or ECT 2)
Air pockets in the cooling system or low coolant level
Faulty thermostat stuck open or partially open
Wiring issues (high resistance in the circuit) or internal ECU fault

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
