Technical Description
The P011D code is stored when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects a correlation error between Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor 1 and IAT sensor 2. IAT 1 is typically part of the MAF sensor, while IAT 2 is located after the charge air cooler. At cold start, the ECU compares the two readings; if the deviation exceeds a calibrated limit (typically 5-10°C), the rationality check fails. This data is critical for calculating air density, fuel mapping, and boost pressure control.
Possible Causes
Faulty IAT sensor 2 (usually located in the charge pipe/intake)
Faulty IAT sensor 1 (usually integrated into the MAF sensor)
Wiring oxidation or high resistance in connector terminals
Extremely dirty or restricted charge air cooler affecting thermal dissipation
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check connectors for MAF and the post-intercooler IAT sensor for corrosion or backed-out pins.
- Measurement (Cold Start): Use a scan tool to compare IAT1, IAT2, and ECT (Coolant Temp) before starting the engine. They should be within +-3°C of each other.
- Electrical Testing: Verify 5V reference voltage and ground at the sensors. Check sensor resistance (Ohms) against manufacturer specifications (NTC characteristic).
- Advanced Diagnosis: Check for available ECU software updates, as some OEMs have revised the correlation logic tolerances.
- Action: Replace the sensor showing the implausible temperature reading.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
