Technical Description
P0124 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that indicates the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an intermittent signal from the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) or Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor 'A'. The ECU provides a 5V reference signal to the sensor, and the return signal should vary smoothly based on throttle angle (typically 0.5V to 4.5V). When the ECU sees erratic voltage spikes or drops that do not follow the actual physical movement of the throttle, it triggers this code. Because the throttle position is critical for torque management and safety, the vehicle will often enter a reduced power mode (Limp Mode) to prevent unintended acceleration.
Possible Causes
Worn resistive tracks inside the Throttle Body or Accelerator Pedal
Loose connection or oxidized terminals in the connector
Damaged wiring harness (chafing or intermittent short-to-ground)
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check connectors at the throttle body or pedal for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins. Clean with contact cleaner.
- Multimeter Testing: Verify a steady 5V reference and clean ground at the sensor connector.
- Oscilloscope Test: Use an oscilloscope on the signal wire while slowly operating the throttle. Look for 'dropouts' or electrical noise that a standard multimeter might miss. The signal sweep must be smooth.
- Component Replacement: If the signal sweep is erratic, replace the throttle body or pedal assembly. Perform a throttle relearn procedure using a scan tool after replacement.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
